Chief Scientific Officer
Seasonal Database Assistant
The PKD Foundation is seeking a Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) to work for the organization's national headquarters based in Kansas City, Mo. The CSO will report to the CEO and is responsible for establishing and leading the scientific strategic positioning and direction of the Foundation's research and development efforts.
An M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D. or MS in biomedical sciences is required. Must have 5 to 15 years of biomedical, drug discovery and development, or clinical research experience to include research staff management and budget authority. Relevant leadership experience in managing research or research funding in academia or the biotech/pharmaceutical industry, ideally in a publicly visible environment, is necessary.

This part-time, paid internship assists the Development team on a variety of initiatives related to raising the vital financial support that advances the PKD Foundation's mission. The Development team secures financial support through identification, personalized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies throughout the year. The intern will be a contributor to numerous fundraising and donor relations projects, and help manage relationship activities and strategies which are meaningful to donors, and aligned with the Foundation's development plan.
Duties are as follows:
- Support the existing donor relations initiatives
- Participate in the creation of new donor cultivation activities
- Initiate phone calls, letters and emails to donors with the primary goal of expressing appreciation for their support, and to further connect them to the mission of the Foundation
- Help with prospect research
- Utilize Raiser's Edge donor software to document communication with donors and update their records
- Help with mailings as needed
- Perform other support functions as needed
Qualifications are as follows:
Education/Experience – This internship is designed for current undergraduate students at the junior or senior level who are pursuing a career in the nonprofit sector. The purpose of the internship is to help students further advance their skills through experience at a national nonprofit. The development intern must have a positive attitude and eagerness to learn about fundraising and donor relations strategies. Knowledge of the nonprofit sector and fundraising, either through coursework or professional experience is a must; volunteer experience preferred.
Ability/Skills – The development intern must possess excellent communication skills with the ability to confidently and clearly communicate information verbally and in writing. Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and online research tools is a must. Customer service experience and experience with donor databases is preferred.
Knowledge/Judgment – The development intern should have strong attention to detail, a sense of professionalism and excellent customer service skills. The intern should be comfortable on the phone, and have excellent writing kills. The ability to follow directions and ask questions while managing multiple projects simultaneously is also important. The intern should show a willingness to assist where help is most-needed, be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality and work with minimum supervision.

The PKD Foundation is currently seeking a fall marketing intern. The marketing intern will assist the marketing team with social media, website updates, design projects, email marketing campaigns and media contact lists. The intern will also assist with writing and copy editing news releases, website copy, e-newsletter and quarterly magazine. They may also have the opportunity to interview patients.
The ideal candidate should be a rising college junior or senior majoring in journalism, marketing, communications, government relations or a related field. He or she must be an energetic and creative team player with strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience with PC Microsoft programs, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, are required. Design, social media and web experience are a plus. This is an ongoing, open position, filled every semester.
Hours are flexible (requirement of at least 20 hours per week). This is a part-time paid internship.

Input incoming daily cash receipts, run daily revenue reports, process mailings and perform certain administrative duties. Candidate must have organizational skills, flexibility to work hours as needed, teamwork, written communication skills and an ability to work without supervision. Previous experience with working with Sphere and Raiser's Edge preferred.
- Using the Raiser's Edge CRM/Sphere to, add, clean and validate company and individual records, making sure that contact data is accurate and complete.
- Enter daily revenues to the appropriate member account in database; this includes cash, checks, credit card an online donations.
- Run daily reports from database system for separate types of gift revenues and balance with bank deposits.
- Maintain files of all correspondence and donor gift information, organized by date.
- Provide back up support for other database assistant duties as needed.
- Other administrative and clerical duties as assigned.
Skills required for the job
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and dependability on repetitive tasks.
- High level of typing accuracy and speed.
- Ability to follow a schedule of work and meet set target.
- Experience using databases and CRM systems, ideally Raiser's Edge and Sphere.

Education/Experience - Two years data entry and/or secretarial experience with preference to those with bookkeeping experience. High school graduate or equivalent with experience in business, bookkeeping and word processing courses.
Physical Demands – Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time, use hands and arms, read, stoop, crouch, talk, hear, see objects clearly at 20 inches or less, and lift and move items weighing up to 20 lbs.
