Dan Vater, Corporate Relations Director
Dan Vater joined the PKD Foundation as Corporate Relations Director December 2012. In support of the mission of the PKD Foundation Dan leads the Foundation's efforts to maximize donations from corporate and other institutional donors.
Dan began his fund raising career in 1988, serving as the first Director of Development at Rockhurst High School in Kansas City. As the school's chief fund raising officer, he led a successful effort to raise $3 million for new campus facilities (anchored by a performing arts center) and other programs. Dan joined the National Kidney Foundation in 1992 as Corporate Relations Director, where he managed fund raising efforts targeted to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. At the NKF, Dan played a pivotal role in capturing corporate funding for their largest patient program focused on early detection and intervention of kidney disease. He also served in a similar capacity for the American Academy of Family Physicians in Leawood, KS, and has also worked in the investment consulting and financial services industry.
Dan received his undergraduate and graduate (MBA) degrees from Rockhurst College (now Rockhurst University) in Kansas City.

Kathleen Griffin, Major Gifts Officer
Kathleen Griffin joined the PKD Foundation February 2013 as Major Gifts Officer. In support of the mission of the PKD Foundation her role is to facilitate relationships with those who want to financially support the treatment and cure of PKD through their individual, private foundation and planned gifts.
Kathleen has extensive experience in the nonprofit sector as a fundraiser, facilitator, volunteer, donor and board member. Through her most recent work with Union Station Kansas City and United Way of Greater Kansas City, she was able to align the interests of major donors with initiatives that served the greater good of the community. She is committed to developing symbiotic partnerships to ensure the vision of the PKD Foundation is one day a reality.
Kathleen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and English from Cornell College and a Master of Public Administration degree from the Bloch School at University of Missouri-Kansas City.
In addition to her work with PKD Foundation, she sustains her passion for improving the community through her volunteer work with Water.org and as a member of the Exec Council of genKC through the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.

Pat Smithson, Major Gifts Officer
Pat Smithson joined the PKD Foundation September 2012 as Major Gifts Officer. In support of the mission of the PKD Foundation her role is to help facilitate those who want to financially support the treatment and cure of PKD through their individual, private foundation and planned gifts.
Pat has a long history of work in the nonprofit and association sectors. She has served as a social worker with chronically mentally ill adults, engaged in development and chapter relations work with the Missouri Easter Seals Society, Research Mental Health Services, the National Kidney Foundation and ARMA International. Pat has 14 years of business development experience, developing local, national and international multi-faceted relationships including working for an IT consulting firm and owning a commercial printing company. Pat believes that relationships are formed one at a time and only through meeting the donors’ interests in supporting the PKD Foundation. Aligning programming needs and funders is a goal Pat is enthusiastic to tackle for the Foundation.
Pat holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education from University of Missouri – Kansas City and a Master’s degree in Management from Webster University.
