About
Nephrology is the art and science of the care of the kidney. The skilled physicians and staff of Jefferson’s Division of Nephrology in Philadelphia offer comprehensive care for chronic or acute renal disorders, essential and secondary hypertension, diabetic kidney disease, polycystic kidney disease and renal failure, and dialysis treatment or transplantation.
Jefferson performs a large amount of kidney transplants per year, and the Division staff plays a significant and personalized role. Weekly meetings are held to evaluate transplant candidates based on medical testing, psychological evaluation and the discussion of the benefits and risks of transplantation. The Division also plays an active role with the post-transplant patient.
Jefferson nephrology has set up special polycystic kidney disease (PKD) clinic since 2018. PKD clinic will provide state of art, individualized management plan for each patient with PKD based on the family history, mutation and life style. PKD registry was established from 10/2020, which intend to recruit most of the patients with PKD being seen at Jefferson. The goal of the registry is to study the effect of life style including diet and exercise on progression of disease. The ultimate target of Jefferson PKD clinic is prolong the time for patients with PKD to needing renal replacement therapy, work with other organizations to finding treatments and a cure for PKD to improve the lives of those it affects.
